St Modwen Developments
South Wales
Glan Llyn
This major regeneration project is a £1bn development transforming the 600-acre former Newport Llanwern Steelworks site into a major new community for South Wales.
The site provides many environmental and engineering challenges and is regarded as one of the largest schemes of its kind in the UK. It is expected to take a further 15 years to complete.
The development will include:
• 4,000 new high-quality homes built for all, including first time buyers and families.
• A range of sports facilities and an abundance of open parkland, wildlife habitats and new lakes.
• Primary schools, nurseries and after schoolactivities.
• The 100-acre Celtic Business Park with planning for office, manufacturing and warehousing uses creating approximately 2,000 out of circa 6,000 jobs.
• A local centre including a public house, retail, leisure and community facilities.
• An integrated transport strategy that includes new road links, cycle routes, footpaths and bus services.
Safety For have been working on this project from the start, as CDM Coordinator for the demolition phase of the Observation Tower, Tata HQ, the remaining substations and structures. The next phase was the remediation and ground engineering to provide suitable plots for future development.
Safety For were PD for Chalcroft Construction building the new Amazon warehouse. Safety For have been pre-tender PD for all the many schemes, which have gone into developing this site, over the last 9 years, and have gone on to be Construction PD for many of the projects. Work started on site 2009 and is ongoing. The main challenge has been the coordination of health and safety, with all the different projects, Principal Contractors and the general public, in a fast-moving development.
